Google Duplex on the Web
Google Duplex on the Web was discontinued in December 2022 after three years of attempting to automate mobile web checkouts.
“In our view, Google built a sophisticated web agent that could automate twenty-step checkouts, only to find that the live internet is defined by anti-bot defenses, dynamic layouts, and webmasters who block crawlers.”
Our takeGoogle Duplex on the Web was an AI automation feature introduced in 2019 to help Google Assistant complete multi-step online tasks such as booking movie tickets, renting cars, and managing passwords before Google quietly shut it down in December 2022.

The Pitch
Google introduced Duplex on the Web as an expansion of its automated phone reservation technology into browser workflows E4. The system was designed to allow the Google Assistant to navigate third-party websites and complete online multi-step tasks on behalf of users E4E4E4E2E4E4. Users interacted with the tool through Google Assistant on Android mobile devices using voice or text commands E4. Initial capabilities focused on booking rental cars and purchasing movie tickets directly within mobile browser sessions E4E4. The software automatically entered booking information, navigated complex digital checkout flows, and completed payment transactions E4. The system pulled user information directly from linked services, filling in trip details saved in Gmail and billing credentials stored in Chrome E4E4E2. Google planned availability for English speakers in the United States and the United Kingdom on Android phones with the Assistant E4. The platform later expanded to handle e-commerce checkout, food ordering, airline flight check-in, automated discount search, and changing compromised passwords E4E4E2. To understand changing web page layouts and user flows, Google deployed a specialized crawler called DuplexWeb-Google to train its machine learning models against target websites E2. The feature was bundled directly into Google Assistant and Android at no direct cost to consumers E2.
What Happened
Google unveiled Duplex on the Web at the Google I/O developer conference in May 2019 E4E4E4E2E4E4. The technology aimed to transfer Google Assistant automation from phone calls to complex mobile web tasks that frequently took up to twenty steps E4E4E2. Google launched Duplex on the Web in 2019 to automate online form filling and streamline consumer purchases E4E4E4. During its Search On event in October 2020, Google announced that it was piloting the service for shopping checkout and online food ordering E4E4E4E2E4E4. The automation expanded across diverse commercial tasks, including ticket buying, rental car scheduling, airline check-ins, and changing exposed passwords E4E4E2. Behind the scenes, the automation depended heavily on frequent web crawling to understand web designs and train models against specific retail workflows E2. This technical approach proved resource-intensive to operate and vulnerable whenever website administrators blocked the specialized crawler from indexing their pages E2. Google posted an update to an official support page announcing that Duplex on the Web was deprecated E4. The deprecation notice stated that Duplex on the Web and all automation features enabled by it would no longer receive support as of December 2022 E4. Reports confirmed that the service ceased operations after November 30, 2022, effectively ending all enabled automation flows E2E4E4E4E4E4E4. Alongside the formal shutdown of the consumer service, Google officially retired its DuplexWeb-Google crawling agent E4. The discontinuation marked the quiet closure of Google's browser automation agent initiative without an immediate direct replacement E2E4E4E4E4E4E4.
Why It FailedOur take
In our view, Duplex on the Web failed primarily due to agent unreliability stemming from brittle web scraping and volatile page layouts. Automating complex transactional flows like airline check-ins and movie purchases required constant, high-maintenance crawling across thousands of independent third-party web domains. When website operators modified their document object models, introduced bot protection, or actively blocked the DuplexWeb-Google crawler, automated browser sessions broke down mid-checkout. Because modern web applications change continuously, maintaining reliable zero-click agency without direct platform APIs created an unsustainable engineering burden that contemporary machine learning models could not reliably handle.
Lessons and What Would Have Worked
- In our view, founders building autonomous web agents should avoid relying on headless crawling and heuristic DOM mapping unless site owners have an explicit commercial incentive not to block your bot.
- If an automation agent cannot guarantee deterministic checkout completion without human intervention, users will revert to manual browser autofill rather than risk failed or delayed transactions.
- In our opinion, building web action models on top of external web interfaces requires partnering directly with platforms via structured APIs, as scraping dynamic interfaces incurs prohibitive maintenance overhead.

Last year at I/O we introduced our Duplex technology, which can make a restaurant reservation through the Google Assistant by placing a phone call on your behalf. Now, we’re expanding Duplex beyond voice to help you get things done on the web. To start, we’re focusing on two specific tasks: booking rental cars and movie tickets. Using “Duplex on the Web,” the Assistant will automatically enter information, navigate a booking flow, and complete a purchase on your behalf.

With Duplex on the web, Google Assistant can also complete tasks on the mobile web that would otherwise take up to 20 steps to complete, like booking a rental car or buying movie tickets. And we’re currently piloting the same experience with things like shopping and food ordering for a faster checkout.
