Starbucks

Starbucks Odyssey ended on March 31, 2024, closing its web3 loyalty beta and marketplace after fifteen months of operation.

In our view, nobody waking up before their morning espresso wanted to trade non-fungible stamps on Polygon just to earn a caffeinated beverage.

The Pitch

Starbucks introduced Starbucks Odyssey as a blockchain-based loyalty platform and NFT community extending its Starbucks Rewards program E4E2E2E4E4E4E4E4. The program was built on Polygon's proof-of-stake network sitting on top of Ethereum E4. Starbucks designed the experience to allow customers to earn and purchase digital collectible stamps in the form of non-fungible tokens E4. Rather than requiring cryptocurrency or a crypto wallet, the system allowed participants to buy limited-edition stamps directly with a credit card or debit card E2E2E4E4E4E4E4. Members accessed the platform through the Starbucks Odyssey web app experience E4. Within the application, participants engaged in interactive activities and educational modules called Journeys E2. Completing these interactive Journeys allowed members to earn collectible Journey Stamps and Odyssey Points E2E2E4E4E4E4E4. Each stamp included a point value based on its rarity, and stamps could be bought or sold among members in the marketplace E2E4E4. Starbucks envisioned Odyssey as an avenue for its most loyal customers to unlock exclusive coffee experiences and perks beyond standard free drinks E4E2E2E4E4E4E4E4. Leadership described blockchain as merely the underlying enabler, expecting many customers would interact with digital collectibles without realizing they were using Web3 technology E2E4.

What Happened

In September 2022, Starbucks officially unveiled plans for Starbucks Odyssey as an extension of its core customer loyalty system E4E2E2E4E4E4E4E4. The company partnered with Polygon for blockchain infrastructure and tapped Nifty Gateway to power its digital marketplace E4. On December 8, 2022, Starbucks opened the Odyssey beta to its first group of United States testers, consisting of rewards members and employees drawn from a waitlist E2E2E4E4E4E4. Members who gained access completed interactive coffee-themed Journeys to collect stamps and accumulated points toward exclusive real-world benefits E2E2E4E4E4E4E4. Soon after rollout, Starbucks enabled secondary market trading where participants could buy and sell stamps through the Nifty Gateway integration E2E2E4E4E4E4E4. However, the initiative launched during an extended downturn across the broader cryptocurrency sector E4E4. Over the following year, wider consumer interest in corporate non-fungible token experiments declined rapidly across the retail industry E4. Major brands that had enthusiastically embraced Web3 began quietly closing down their token programs and marketplace experiments E4. On March 15, 2024, Starbucks announced via an FAQ update that it would end the Odyssey Beta program on March 31, 2024 E4E2E2E4E4E4E4E4. The company stated that the Odyssey Beta had to conclude to prepare for future iterations of its loyalty program E4. With the closure on March 31, 2024, Starbucks shut down the dedicated Odyssey marketplace and shuttered the official community Discord server E4E4E4. The company transferred the ability to trade existing Stamps to the third-party Nifty Gateway platform so holders could continue buying and selling them E4E4E4E4. Starbucks subsequently refocused corporate attention on its traditional loyalty tier structure and store operations E2E2E4E4E4E4.

Why It FailedOur take

In our view, Starbucks Odyssey failed primarily due to novelty wearing off (novelty_wore_off), compounded by broader market movements (market_moved) and an underlying solution seeking a problem (solution_seeking_problem). When Starbucks conceived Odyssey in 2022, corporate brands treated non-fungible tokens as the cutting edge of digital community engagement. In our view, the core customer base of a coffee chain wanted straightforward transactional value, such as free drinks, quick mobile ordering, and simple point accrual, rather than speculative digital tokens and gamified Web3 Journeys. By launching into an oncoming crypto bear market, Odyssey missed the peak of speculative hype. Once initial curiosity among crypto enthusiasts faded, ordinary coffee drinkers showed little lasting appetite to trade digital stamps on an external marketplace. The friction of maintaining a Discord server and secondary token trading offered negligible upside to everyday retail loyalty operations.

Lessons and What Would Have Worked

  1. In our opinion, founders should never replace simple, direct customer incentives with complex tokenized abstractions when users primarily value immediate transactional utility.
  2. If a consumer loyalty model requires onboarding mainstream users into secondary marketplaces and Discord channels, it introduces friction that outlasts initial speculative novelty.
  3. When external speculative cycles drive adoption metrics, customer retention will collapse the moment broader market sentiment turns negative.

Starbucks today is launching its blockchain-based loyalty program and NFT community, Starbucks Odyssey, to its first group of U.S. beta testers. The new initiative, which includes coffee-themed NFTs that translate to real-world experiences, is an extension of Starbucks’ existing loyalty program, Starbucks Rewards, but leverages web3 technology like the polygon blockchain and NFTs. Announced to investors earlier this year, the coffee chain giant said it envisioned Starbucks Odyssey as a way for its most loyal customers to earn a broader, more diverse set of rewards beyond the perks they can earn today, like free drinks. Instead, Odyssey introduces a new platform where customers can engage with interactive activities called “Journeys” that, when complete, allow members to earn collectible Journey Stamps — which is Starbucks’ less geeky name for NFTs.

Now more than ever, leading brands are exploring new ways to harness the power of Web3. We are thrilled that Gemini-owned Nifty Gateway has been tapped to power the new Starbucks Odyssey market, a web3 and NFT-based extension of the Starbucks loyalty program, which launched in beta last week to the first Starbucks Rewards members and partners (employees) in the U.S. In September 2022, Starbucks announced their plans for the Starbucks Odyssey experience. Shortly after beta launch, Starbucks Odyssey members can purchase or sell NFTs, called Stamps, through the Starbucks Odyssey market powered by Nifty Gateway. Early next year, members will be able to purchase limited-edition stamps directly with a credit card. No crypto wallet or cryptocurrency will be required. With this news, Nifty Gateway continues to be a pioneer in the NFT space, making available a full suite of tools to support the development of unique, creative, and scalable branded NFT experiences. These tools allow brands like Starbucks to expand into Web3 and offer the accessibility, ease, and convenience that customers have come to expect when making online purchases. “Nifty Gateway’s custody options make it the preferred NFT marketplace for the next generation of Web3-powered brands and their customers,” said Duncan Cock Foster, Co-Founder of Nifty Gateway. “Starbucks is building one of the largest ever on-ramps to Web3 and we’re so excited to be enhancing their customers’ experience through NFTs.”

Starbucks has announced that it will be ending its Odyssey Beta program on March 31. The program allowed customers to earn and buy digital collectible stamps in the form of nonfungible tokens (NFTs). The Odyssey marketplace, where users could trade their digital stamps, will also shut down, as will the community Discord server. Starbucks did not provide a reason for ending the program, but said that it is "preparing for what comes next" as it continues to "evolve the program." However, users will be able to buy, sell and trade stamps on the Nifty Gateway marketplace. According to the website, Starbucks said: "We are excited for you to see what comes next and are grateful for your consistent engagement and feedback. We are thankful to have had this opportunity to test into these different ways of driving community and loyalty at Starbucks and we look forward to bringing these learnings to a broader audience." Starbucks launched Odyssey Beta in September 2022, during a challenging period for the crypto industry. The program was built on the Polygon network, which uses a more energy-efficient "proof-of-stake" consensus mechanism than proof-of-work blockchains. Starbucks' decision to end its NFT program follows similar moves by other major companies. In January, GameStop announced that it was closing its NFT marketplace after a series of cutbacks in its crypto services. Meta also pulled the plug on its NFT features across Facebook and Instagram in 2022.

Starbucks has quietly scrapped its AI-powered inventory management system after only nine months since its deployment. The coffee giant confirmed to _Fortune_ it has made an operational decision to move to a single model of counting inventory following an announcement in September to deploy its automated counting tool. The app, provided by NomadGo, took inventory of beverage components like milk and syrups in order to keep track of item shortages. In February, _Reuters_, which [first reported](https://www.reuters.com/business/starbucks-scraps-ai-inventory-tool-across-north-america-2026-05-21/) the discontinuation of the tool this week, cited Starbucks sources who said the app often miscounted or mislabeled items, failing to identify the presence of bottles on shelves. "We test ideas in our coffeehouses, listen closely to partner feedback, and make changes to deliver a better, more consistent experience," a spokesperson told _Fortune_ in a statement.
