OpenAI's Sora app, a TikTok-style feed of AI-generated videos launched in September 2025 with a $1B Disney partnership following in December, was shut down in March 2026 as the company cut costs ahead of a prospective IPO.

The Pitch

An AI-only social network. Every video in the feed is generated, and you and your friends can star in them by uploading a likeness. Launched invite-only in September 2025 alongside the Sora 2 model, it hit one million downloads in under five days. E2E2 In December Disney announced a $1B investment and a deal to bring its characters to the feed. E2E2

What Happened

On 24 March 2026, six months after launch, OpenAI announced it was closing the app and told the BBC it was exiting video generation to focus on other areas including robotics. E2E2 CNBC reported the company cited cost-cutting ahead of a prospective IPO. E2E2 According to CNBC's reporting, Disney's team learned of the cancellation thirty minutes after a joint working meeting, and one person described the moment as "a big rug-pull". E2E2E2E2 OpenAI has not published usage or retention figures for the app.

Why It FailedOur take

This section is our assessment, and its basis is the timing: an app that reached a million downloads in five days was closed inside six months as a cost cut, and OpenAI has not published retention figures. From that we infer a primary cause of novelty wore off: a feed of generated clips is astonishing for a week and then it is a feed with nothing your friends actually did in it. We tag two secondary causes: inference cost above price, because every scroll generated video that was free to the user, and market never came, because a launch this large did not produce a business OpenAI chose to keep. If OpenAI publishes usage data, this entry will be updated and the causes re-assessed.

Our timing verdict is market never came, not too early. The technology did what it promised; in our view the product answered a question nobody was asking.

Lessons and What Would Have Worked

  1. Downloads measure curiosity; retention measures a product. A million installs in five days did not, on the public record, translate into a product OpenAI kept.
  2. Generated content competes with real content for the same attention, and real content is free to produce. A synthetic feed needs a reason to exist beyond "look what the model can do".
  3. Partnerships announced at the peak become the most visible casualty at the trough. The Disney deal turned a quiet product cull into a global story.
  4. The capability was the asset. Video generation inside existing tools, where creators already work, was the version with a customer.
