The method and FAQ

We sum the money_amount of published archive entries whose counts_in_counter flag is true. Each contributing amount is linked below. This is disclosed funding and write-downs, not a claim that every dollar was lost. Launch amounts are recorded in USD; no currency conversion is applied here.

What does the Counter sum?

The Counter sums raised and writedown only, for entries with outcome shut_down, acquihired_killed, or product_discontinued where spend was disclosed. Watchlist and market-cap figures never count.

What does raised mean?

raised — total disclosed funding of a company that no longer exists, or of a product line where the company disclosed the spend

What does writedown mean?

writedown — public-company write-down or impairment

What about settlements, refunds and fines?

settlement, refund, fine — as ordered or disclosed. These figures may be shown on an entry, but the Counter sums raised and writedown only.

Why exclude market-cap figures and estimates?

marketcap — one-day drop attributed by major outlets; shown on the entry, never summed

estimate — our estimate with method shown; shown, never summed
